HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018!

Sydney Harbour New Year's Eve 2017

We received an e-mail from an old friend in Australia yesterday morning wishing us a Happy New Year.
He told us that he was at that moment standing on Sydney Harbour and watching the magnificent firework display that heralded the arrival of 2018 to the Southern Hemisphere. It was, he said, the most memorable and breathtaking event he had ever witnessed. (He obviously didn’t get out very much,)
Here at home we were still stuck in 2017 but we returned his good wishes and promised to catch up with Australia later on in the day. We do often be accused of being a bit behind the times here in our neck of the woods.
Anyway, as midnight finally struck, we went outside to shake a drop of holy water and looked up towards Abbeyfeale Hill.
All of a sudden the clouds parted and a magnificent full moon illuminated the whole area, bathing fields and lanes and houses in a pale and ghostly Celtic twilight. It was like some medieval pastoral pageant handed down through the generations to gladden the heart and captivate the soul.

And it left the lights of Sydney Harbour completely in the shade - so it did.
